Today's Sestriere is the result of an idea implemented by the Agnelli during the 1930s. It was in the late '20s when Sestriere first appeared as a large expanse of snow in the middle of which stood a small hotel, built by Vincenzo Possetto (son of the old roadhouse managers). Back then, the town was comprised of a small number of buildings: the roadhouse itself, a refuge for Alpinists, a chapel, and that small hotel. 1931 brought the first substantial change: In that year, Senator Giovanni Agnelli commissioned engineer Vittorio Bonadè Bottino to design the first cable car. It was the departure station of the Alpette - Sises cable car that was the first to be born. 1931 therefore saw a small three-floor building above ground, with a corner tower in the form of a cylinder.
At the time of its construction, the cable car was said to have the largest cable car gondolas in the world, each capable of holding 35 people per trip. In 1932, the building known as La Torre ("The Tower") was built, which entirely transformed the starting station, demolishing the original tower to make way for the new hotel. La Torre has a helical shape (as seen today). The building was later merged with the Alpette - Sises departure station, although originally it was designed as a free-standing structure. In 1933, the Banchetta cable car was built. Meanwhile the Alpette - Sises cable car building was expanded further. The Tower and cable car now form a single complex that defines, on one side, the bus station's arrival piazza and, on the other, the "the start of the snow". We can therefore identify the three phases of construction of the complex, from 1931 to 1933. There are, then, three buildings: a hotel, and two cable car stations, united in a single complex. Over the years, there have been many changes to the colours of the "Piazzale Agnelli complex"; today, the only change is to the La Torre hotel, that has regained its original orange colour.
By 1984, the starting points of the two cable cars, Alpette - Sises and Banchetta, had closed and the complex lost its function, most of its unused spaces disused except for some parts where Sestriere S.p.a. set up its offices. At present, we propose to transform the complex to residential use. This project involves the demolition of the old Banchetta station to give way to a complex that will host residences and tertiary businesses. By 1984, the starting points of the two cable cars, Alpette - Sises and Banchetta, had closed and the complex lost its function, most of its unused spaces disused except for some parts where Sestriere S.p.a. set up its offices. At present, we plan to convert the complex to residential use. This involves the demolition of the old Banchetta station to provide space for residences and tertiary businesses.
The new design leaves some key aspects of the old complex unchanged, such as the Clock Tower, the arch over the road from Sauze di Cesana to Sestriere, and one of the semi-circular buildings with its surviving terrace above the old tourist restaurant that has already been converted over multiple floors to provide new apartments. History would therefore see the complex acquire new functions over time: from a hotel and departure station for cable cars, to office use, and now mixed use, with the current proposal for residences and offices.
